We found this species of Ceanothus growing and blooming at Torrey Pines, in March.  To the right is a close up of the flowers.  Below are two different bushes in bloom.

In the garden:

This erect, stiff-branched, evergreen shrub will grow to heights of 9 feet and may even reach 12 to 15 feet. It’s foliage is small and dark green. It’s stem is warty. Unlike other members of this family, this plant has small white flowers which are quite showy (often an amazing display, which resembles a giant snowball). However, the flowers sometimes are blue. It blooms from January to April. It grows naturally on dry hills and mesas. It is definitely a specimen plant.

In the wild:

Dry hills and mesas to 1000', chaparral, western San Diego Co.

Ethnobotany:

No information found on uses for this species.
