Fragaria vesca (Wood Strawberry)

Photographs

My photos:

At Mt Palomar in April the strawberries were just starting to bloom.  I'd come back next month to eat some but I suspect the local critters will have beat me to it!

Plant Information

Rosaceae

In the garden:

This species is similar to the wild strawberry planted ornamentally in Southern California, but it’s leaves are more delicate. It is a perennial herb with a scaly rootstock. Leaves are trifoliate and are larger when grown in the shade. It will spread by runners. It flowers from May through July with white to pinkish flowers. For the best flowers, plant in full sun. Edible strawberries are usually reached by birds first.

In the wild:

Damp banks and woods, between 4000 and 10,500 feet.

Ethnobotany:

No information found on this plant, although I'm sure it was  used for a sweet treat when the local folks happened upon it.
