Cactaceae

In the garden:

This openly branched cactus is spreading to erect, with a short main trunk. It grows to a height of 6 feet and is wider than tall. Branches are cylindrical and light green. It is armed with stout, straw-colored spines. Flowers are rusty red to yellow or greenish-yellow and occur from May to June. Once established, it will require little or no water. 

In the wild:

In nature, it grows on dry mesas and slopes, below 4500 feet.
