On Line School Gardening Resources

All of the web sites listed have materials that can be used by teachers and school gardeners. Many of them list sources for grants for starting a school garden.

Los Angeles County Master Gardeners' Common Ground

A great Master Gardener program that supports school gardening.  They conduct "How-to" workshops.  Click on "School Gardens" to download their School Garden Startup Guide in English or Spanish, or the "Children's Gardens" book.

Master Gardener Association San Diego County

The San Diego County Master Gardeners have a very active school gardening program. Their website includes a very detailed guide on how to begin and maintain a school garden.

California Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom

Lots of lesson ideas for teachers on a variety of topics related to agriculture, including lesson plans and activities.  They offer materials to use with the lessons.   CFAITC holds an annual conference in summer in various parts of the state.

Edible Schoolyard

This program was started several decades ago by Alice Waters, chef, cookbook author, and owner of Chez Panisse in Berkeley, California. The website is a source of information, ideas, and lesson plans.

California School Garden Network

California Regional Environmental Education Community

Great environmental resource for teachers. It generally includes a list of grants, educational opportunities, and other resources for teachers.

Kids Gardening

This site is associated with the National Gardening Association. They offer lesson ideas, a great database of resources including sources of funding, and lots of child-oriented gardening materials and supplies for sale.

Mel Bartholomew’s Square Foot Gardening Website

This approach to home gardening is very effective, particularly in small spaces. The website includes a school gardens link along with lots of other useful information.
